This watercolour of Mrs Knighton Hammond would have been painted at speed. There is limited paint in the picture but sufficient for all the salient elements to be present to give his wife the sensitive and thoughtful character which we know she had from the artist’s diaries. There is sufficient detail to give a good likeness and the human presence is there for all to see. Simple brushstrokes give solidity to the figure.
