This family conversation piece is of Mrs Knighton Hammond (second wife) and daughter Mary sitting at a table under an umbrella. Mrs K H appears to be busy sewing whilst Mary is looking bored as she had probably been told to sit still whilst the artist quickly produced this watercolour. There is a lot of content in the picture and K-H has skilfully depicted sunlight and shadow. The glazed terracotta pot and the perspective of the empty chair provide real foreground space and depth to the composition and the tree and umbrella adds colour.
