From early in his career, at first sight this watercolour has a very limited palette. None of the usual slashes of red. The artist is, however, simply painting what was before him. Located in the Market Square, Penniless Porch is an entrance to the Cathedral Close and the Cathedral beyond. This is the manmade world of masonry and paving almost devoid of nature. The scattered figures do add a touch of colour as well as scale and movement. Without being slavish to detail, the architectural elements demonstrate the period of history from when the historic buildings were built. There is a grey sky but there is sufficient light cast to highlight the facades of the buildings.
