Whilst living in Cap Martin, Knighton-Hammond used to be up and out in the early morning to capture the different light effects offered by the Mediterranean. In this watercolour he uses the pine trees, with their rich evergreen foliage, to frame the scene across the bay. The morning atmosphere baths the coastline in hazy sunlight with the architecture blending into the mountainous backdrop. This would have been painted by Knighton-Hammond at lightning speed in a free, Impressionistic manner.
