This oil painting in dominated by the two horses waiting patiently whilst the farm operative takes a break. They are full harnessed ready to continue ploughing. The powerful heavy horses are brilliantly depicted with clever modelling giving them their robust, solid, muscular stature. Once the spectator sees beyond the horses, the artist gives depth to the composition through its successive horizontal planes of colour depicting fields, trees and the atmospheric blues of the background blending into the sky. The study of light enhanced by the texture of the impasto oil paint lifts this scene of everyday rural life to something quite special.
