There is a lot of ink in this etching so it is likely that the artist would have run-off earlier states building up to this final state. The composition is busy demonstrating fine draughtsmanship. The spontaneity of the figures on the nearside bank of the River Seine speaks for itself. The architecture of Pont Neuf and the impressive buildings beyond is a masterclass in linear perspective. The hatching given light and shade is very accomplished. The figures looking over the parapet of the bridge and the street lamps add so much to the composition and are part of the fine tuning of the etching. This is another example of Knighton-Hammond portraying everyday life and cleverly elevating it into an art form.
