Knighton-Hammond’s portraits have individuality. He was renowned for his ability to capture the inner mood and personality of his sitter, whom he painted from life. This portrait of a man conveys sensitivity in the eyes and thoughtful expression such are the penetrating powers of observation of the artist. The complexion and the volume of the head is modelled with thick impasto oil paint. The articulated clothing gives solidarity and bulk of the anatomy. The simple background cleverly projects the sitter into the space of the spectator.
