Knighton-Hammond produced a red chalk drawing of Brangwyn from which to produce this etching. One can only imagine the conversation taking place between these two seasoned artists when this was going on. The portrait would have been carried by Knighton-Hammond in the mid to late 1930s when he was living in Ditchling. Sir Frank also lived there and the two were close friends. The original red chalk drawing and a copy of the etching are in The National Portrait Gallery, London. If one goes onto their website to view the drawing you will see that in transferring the drawing to his etching plate Knighton-Hammond has not lost any of the speed of line or spontaneity. This is a real character study with personality present in the etching. The slight exaggeration in the hands give greater expression. One feels that this is two artists expressing their friendship.
