Mr Reeves, The Tramp appears to have been a frequent visitor to Knighton-Hammond’s studio in Ditchling in the mid-1930s. This small etching may well have derived from a study which he later turned into an oil painting. It may have been the warmth of Knighton-Hammond’s studio which attracted Mr Reeves but there certainly seemed to have been great friendship between artist and sitter. One can imagine the dialog taking place between them during the portrait process.
