The harbour may possibly be Oneglia just over the France/Italian border in Italy in the Imperia area. The masts divide up the composition with their verticality. When your eyes escape the masts, you are drawn to the imposing buildings on the far side of the harbour. These have been depicted in a very free manner not slavishly representing detail. This picture would have been painted at great speed and with great energy, as is Knighton-Hammond’s way with artistic expression. There is fluidity in the handling of the watercolours and would have been painted on the spot, en plein air.
