The harbour would be on the French Riviera, possibly in the Menton area. Whilst the brushstrokes appear to be haphazard in the foreground water, they are part of a profusion of constructive marks depicting the sea and the reflections from the sailing boats. The boats give a range foreshortening effect. The harbour wall breaks the composition with the atmospheric mountains in the background. The use of watercolour shows an instinctive feeling for light, colour and tone producing a work of luminosity and clarity.
