When Knighton-Hammond was living in Venice he had a large output of works. San Giorgio Maggiore was a subject that appealed to him. Designed by Andrea Palladio, perhaps the most imitated architect or all time, Knighton-Hammond captures the view across the Giudecca canal. The emblematic architecture has been painted at speed with pure, direct watercolour. The perspective is a testament to the artist’s skill as a draughtsman. The complex of buildings is silhouetted against a deep blue sky. The gondolier in the foreground gives a sense of movement to the composition.
