St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere in the Lake District is situated on the banks of the River Rothay in the centre of the village. The watercolour is painted very precisely in tones not normally used by Knighton-Hammond but this was an early picture and his style and technique were still evolving. The foliage of the trees and river bank and reflections in the water are very fluid and there is a sense of luminosity in the composition.
St Oswald’s Church is the final resting place of poet William Wordsworth.
