This stunning study of sunflowers one feels is a focus on the artist’s own personal sensation and him seeking ways to translate this experience into paint. In conjunction with this variety of brushstrokes and texture of paint, Knighton-Hammond adopts a greater intensity in his colours as can be seen in the strength of the yellow, blue and green. It is closely descriptive of observed nature depicted in texture and chromatics – rich in form and vitality. Knighton-Hammond had the gift of capturing and transforming his motifs: he meticulously reproduced what he observed, and freely interpreted it, moving beyond the mere descriptive to create the pictorial equivalent of sensation. This oil painting was purchased by the present owner direct from the artist’s studio in 1968.
