The Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens was built to commemorate the death of Prince Albert in 1861 to the design of Sir George Gilbert Scott. The monument in the Gothic Revival style is viewed from under a canopy of trees, is well into the background in Knighton-Hammond’s watercolour. The grass and tree foliage are portrayed in strong greens reverting to blue in the far background. The figures in the mid-foreground give a sense of scale and distance.
