The Azo Shed, Dalton Works, Huddersfield, 1919

Location: Huddersfield, Yorkshire, UK

Subject: Industrial Scene

Medium: Oils

Date: 1919

Signature: A K Hammond

Dimensions: 43.5 cm x 49 cm

This painting of the interior of the Azo Shed at the Dalton Works was undertaken whist Knighton-Hammond was engaged by the Government and British Dye Stuffs during World War I. His task was to illustrate the buildings and processes being built and undertaken as part of the war effort. He remained with British Dye Stuffs for a short time after the war had ended. The interior is full of perspective – the structure steelwork of the building, the diminishing size of the vats and the walkway all take linear forms. The figures going about their work give a sense of scale. The colour scheme was restricted to what lay before him.
