Paintings of the finish of horse races for Arthur Hammond was a means of paying the rent. He would buy a newspaper and find out the placings of the race and would paint the picture on the kitchen table. Times were tough when the artist moved to London in 1900 and producing ‘pot boilers’ as he called them was a necessity. Here the horses at full gallop may not be anatomically correct but they are generating excitement in the stands.
