This watercolour would date from July 1925 when Knighton-Hammond was briefly back from the continent. He was given consent to work in and about the Houses of Parliament. The artist was in St Stephen’s Crypt when he set himself up with a view of the Font through a gothic aperture with a low-level railing and wrought ironwork scrolls. The covered font is drenched in light contrasting with the dark area adjacent from which he was painting. Knighton-Hammond applied the watercolour with great freedom and fluidity. One has the feeling that the font is admitting light rather then just reflecting it such is its vibrance.
