Knighton-Hammond creates a striking pictorial space for the gypsy encampment. Full of atmosphere achieved by quickly applied brush strokes giving the painterly illusion of movement and spontaneity, most significantly in the smoke rising from the camp fire. The gypsy woman in the foreground is exceedingly rich in colour and full of vitality with the obvious and visible brush strokes.
Knighton-Hammond has refrained as much as possible from mixing colours on his palette and applied them pure in daubs thickly applied with bold accents to evoke the transience of light.
