The Man with a Scythe is Walt Eglon, a character from the Misterton area of Somerset. Freely painted in watercolour, the seated figure with the handle of the scythe over his shoulder. The face, partially in shade afforded by the brim of his hat, shows an amusing expression. This is likely the result of the relationship between artist and sitter. Knighton-Hammond enjoyed painting local characters. The soles of the hobnail boots are skilfully described. The country gentleman has all the signs of strength and ruggedness sitting on the grass which he will shortly be cutting.
