The Market Place, San Remo is a busy picture – full of life and drama. The many figures are engrossed in conversation. They have been quickly drawn with the brush in pure, direct watercolour achieving great spontaneity and movement. Pictures which engage with everyday subjects and collective activity were Knighton-Hammond’s forte. Having dashed down the figures – the moving elements - he was able to spend more time painting the trees and buildings beyond the market place. The foreground appears unfinished but Knighton-Hammond knew when to stop and let the sketching speak for itself.
