The ‘Old Wye Bridge’ is a 15th century structure across the River Wye in Hereford. It has a long history being rebuilt in the 17th century and widened in 1826. The historic cathedral was begun in 1079 and has substantial parts of the building dating from both Norman and Gothic periods. This watercolour by Knighton-Hammond was early in his career. It shows he had a good understanding of perspective as evident in the architecture of the cathedral, bridge and buildings which are painted with great freedom yet great accuracy. The foliage of the trees, bushes and grass are painted with great fluidity. The reflections from the River Wye are executed to achieve movement in the water.
