Throughout his long career, Knighton-Hammond’s choice of subjects and the ways in which he treated them went through many striking changes. When he was living in Somerset and Dorset it was the local farms that interested him. The everyday subjects and collective activity taking place in nature greatly appealed to him. There is a lot going on in Threshing Time. There is a multitude of figures at work or play in, on and around the farm vehicle. Children are at play on the hayrick. Corn has been bagged up awaiting transportation. The artist’s Impressionistic approach is a direct response of what is before him. The watercolour was rapidly executed, focusing on the overall effect of the scene rather than details within it. His instinctive feeling for light, colour and tone enabled him to produce works of great freshness and immediacy.
