The figures in the foreground of the field have been quickly sketched giving them life and spontaneity. The field with the corn stooks is bathed in bright sunlight apart from the area of shadow cast by the tree. The shadow has been depicted, not with an absence of light, but in a colour of a different value. This technique follows the impressionist style the artist would have picked up whilst working on the continent.
