This landscape in pastels suits and explores the light and colours of nature. Working rapidly with his box of pastels, Knighton-Hammond was able to fix the scene and then manipulate the gradular softness improving textures and transitions of hue of nature before him. He could blur the edge of the moving cloud with his finger tips or add streaks of light as the illumination changed. The artist used narrow, flat planes to give depth from the foreground with the fields and hills creating a gently rhythmic division between land and sky. The dominant tree looks a little precarious with its apparent lean.
