The Vieux Pont (also commonly known as Roman Bridge) is in the picturesque town of Sospel in the Maritime Alps was a favourite location for the artist. The double arched bridge spans the River Bévéra and was painted many times. Knighton-Hammond, painting en plein air, would have set up his paints in the riverbed to capture this emblematic structure with great freshness and immediacy. Knighton-Hammond’s instinctive feeling for light, colour and tone enabled him to produce works of luminosity and clarity.
