This farmyard dating from 1910 is likely to be in North Wales when Knighton-Hammond was staying in Colwyn Bay. The young farmworker is surrounded by chickens and appears to have an egg basket tucked under his left arm. The brood of chickens appear lively, colourful and solicits the attention of the spectator. The free handling of the quickly applied paint gives the painterly illusion of movement and spontaneity. The farm buildings have accurate linear perspective and the rugged stonework is so well depicted. This oil painting was purchased by the present owner direct from the artist’s studio in 1968.
