The view of Youlgrave Church from Church Street was painted in 1906 soon after the artist returned from London. The church and the typical Derbyshire vernacular architecture of the houses are well depicted. A shepherd is driving his flock of sheep along the street gives movement. It is a very social scene with children playing with a hoop on the pavement and other figures outside the church yard and outside their house. There is a feeling of engagement by the artist – a sense of touch in the composition and a focus on interaction. This oil painting was purchased by the present owner direct from the artist’s studio in 1968.
